How often is biannual or biannually?
Confusingly (and many will argue incorrectly), it is also sometimes used to mean something occurring every second year (in the sense of biennial).
Biannual is combined from two English words. Bi (meaning two or twice) and annual (or yearly).
Let’s look at some examples of the use of the word biannual.
“My doctor recommended biannual checks for my cholesterol.”
So how often does the doctor want blood tests?
As he advised biannual checks, it means that he wanted his patient to have blood tests twice yearly.
Example 2
“Our company boss insists on workers having conferences biannually.”
As above, this means the conferences would therefore happen twice in a year.
